“Infant Monitor”

Hey, appear! It really is a skinny version of that guy from Mallrats!

Tonight’s episode of Raising Hope,”Child Monitor,” functions guest stars  Ethan Suplee and Jamie Pressly, playing variations of their My Name is Earl characters. Although their appearances had the potential to steer the how into a self-referential vortex, “Child Monitor” actually escaped almost entirely unscathed. It was, in reality, one particular of the strongest episodes of a show that has gotten sweeter and mellower with age. Suplee reprises his function as a dopey, possibly sub-literate type, married to a hectoring, verbally abusive wife played by Jamie Pressly. So although neither performer is precisely stretching it, they are both place to efficient use. Virginia accidentally hears the neighbors bickering by way of the infant monitor—”I saw this on Modern day Loved ones and numerous other sitcoms,” she explains—but it is Burt who becomes engrossed in their domestic disputes. (Speaking of Burt, if multirae monitors you haven’t done so yet, do yourself a favor and read Todd’s great interview.

He feels obliged to assist out his fellow man, but Virginia is reluctant to get involved simply because she does not want to grow to be the “meddling busybody stick-your-nose-in-other-people’s-organization snoop.” Burt’s 1st step is to get rid of the stump from Andrew’s yard. Then, with Virgnia’s grudging cooperation, Burt invites Donna and Andrew over. The ostensible cause is for a dinner celebration, but Burt has ulterior motives: sending Donna to “wife school” to find out how to be a nicer spouse.

Virginia plays along, and the gambit appears to function, until Donna overhears Burt explaining the plot to Andrew.  Virginia gets blamed for the conspiracy, and abruptly she’s the neighborhood busybody she dreaded becoming.

Of course, it all performs out in the end. With Donna’s animosity focused completely on Virginia, Andrew is off the hook. And, as Burt multirae monitors points out, it really is more critical that Andrew and Donna are pleased than that every person likes Virginia. Raising Hope typically ends with these kinds of heartwarming counter-intuitive twists, and it is anything I appreciate about the show.  It is got a soft, gooey heart, but the sentiment is hardly ever served straight-up.

While Burt and Virginia are operating “wife school,” Jimmy and the gang are brainstorming suggestions for a Howdy’s commercial. The goal is to finally triumph over Howdy’s West uninspired campaigns (“We just have apples. They are inexpensive and round and red, like God intended.”) but there is dissent amongst the ranks. Barney decides the only solution is to have every person submit their own commercial to him, and then he’ll determine the winner. “It will be people working within a bigger framework,” he explains. “Like Al Qaeda?”  Frank asks. (His character was on fire this week, wasn’t he?)
