Military Healthcare Standards for Enlistment & Appointment

Updated June 10, 2009The disqualifying health-related situations are listed beneath. The International Classification
of Disease (ICD) codes are listed in parentheses following each standard.

The causes for rejection for appointment, enlistment, and induction (with out
an approved
waiver) are an authenticated history of:

Present ailments of sebaceous glands to contain severe acne (706.1), if substantial
involvement of the neck, shoulders, chest, or back is present or would be aggravated
by or interfere with the correct wearing of military gear, are disqualifying
. Applicants under treatment with system icretinoids, which includes, Accutane(r))
are disqualified till eight (eight) weeks following completion of therapy.

Current or history of atopic dermatitis (691) or eczema (692) after the 9
th birthday is disqualifying.

Existing or history of make contact with dermatitis (692.4), especially involving components
employed in any sort of essential protective equipment, is disqualifying.

Cysts.

(1) Existing cysts (706.two), (other than pilonidal cysts) of such a size or
location as to interfere with the proper wearing of military gear is
disqualifying.

(two) Present pilonidal cysts (685), if evidenced by the presence of a tumor
mass or a discharging sinus is disqualifyi n g . Surgically resected pilonidal
cyst that is symptomatic , unhealed , or significantly less than 6 months post-operative
is disqualifying.

Present or history of bullous dermatoses (694), including, but not limited
to dermatitis herpetiformis, pemphigus, and epidermolysis bullosa, is disqualifying.

Present chronic lymphedema (457.1) is disqualifying.

wearing of military equipment or the overall performance of military duties, are disqualifying.

Current or history of furunculosis or carbuncle (680), if extensive, recurrent,
or chronic is disqualifying.

Present or history of severe hyperhidrosis of hands or feet (780.eight) is disqualifying.

Existing or history of congenital (757) or acquired (216) anomalies of the
skin such as nevi or vascular tumors that interfere with function, or are exposed
to continuous irritation are disqualifying. History of Dysplastic Nevus Syndrome
(232) is disqualifying.

Current or history of keloid formation (701.four), if the tendency is marked
or interferes with the correct wearing of military equipment, is disqualifying.
l. Current lichen planus (697.) is disqualifying. m. Current or history of
neurofibromatosis (von Recklinghausen’s illness) (237.7) is disqualifying.

History of photosensitivity (692.72), such as, but not restricted to any major
sun-sensitive situation, such as polymorphous light eruption or solar urticaria
any dermatosis aggravated by sunlight such as lupus erythematosus is disqualifying.

Existing or history of psoriasis (696.1) is disqualifying.

Current or history of radiodermatitis (692.82) is disqualifying.

Current scars (709.2), or any other chronic skin disorder of a degree or nature
that requires frequent outpatient therapy or hospitalization, which in the
opinion of the certifying authority affects thermoregulatory function, or will
interfere with the wearing of military clothes or equipment, or which exhibits
a tendency to ulcerate, or interferes with the satisfactory performance of duty,
are disqualifying. Involves wart removal scars at skin graft donor or recipient internet sites.

Scars at skin graft donor or recipient websites will include an evaluation of
not only the relative total size of the burn wound, but also the measurable
effects of the wound, the location of the wound and the danger of subsequent injury
related to the wound itself.

Prior burn injury (to contain donor internet sites) involving a total body surface
region of 40 percent or much more is disqualifying.

Prior burn injury involving much less than 40 percent total physique surface region,
which outcomes in a loss or degradation of thermoregulatory function is disqualifying.
Examination will focus on the depth of the burn, anatomic location (extensive

Existing symptomatic plantar wart(s) (078.19) is disqualifying.
